An Unsearchable Problem (Meta Googling)

This post is a few years old now, so some details (or my opinions) might be out of date.
I would still love to hear your feedback in the comments below. Enjoy!

I love Google Chrome. The attention to details in Chrome’s UI is no less than genius. Its tab-closing behavior is one of my favorites. That’s why little kinks it has really bother me. I usually have no issues with Chrome at all, but there’s a feature I came across recently that’s really bugging me.

Sometimes I want to search for Google products online. Google’s naming scheme is pretty straight forward: Maps. Docs, Analytics, etc. So when I want to use one of them, say Maps, I Google “google maps”. Obviously, since I’m using Google Chrome, I just type it in Chrome’s Omnibar. But wait! If you type google in Chrome’s omnibar, it does this:

which is fine, but once you press space, it does this:

Which is really annoying! It actually removed the word “google” from my search because it assumes that typing google was a way for me to tell chrome that I want to do a Google search. But it will have googled what I typed anyway, so why is this necessary? Now I have to either search “google google maps” or “maps google”, both of which are annoying and non intuitive.

Now, I realize this isn’t very interesting, but the funny part is - every time I try to look for a solution online, I’m stumped. Searching for “chrome google search” is obviously not good. “chrome google first search term” yields all kind of SEO crap. Trying to google “google chrome omnibar search engine” annoyed the hell out of me since it caused the same problem I was trying to google. I can’t think of a query that will give good results for this particular problem, can you?
